Who is Dennis Cunanan?

Dennis Cunanan, born in Angeles City, Pampanga to Amelia Lacson and Diosdado Cunanan, was an individual marked by determination and an unwavering sense of purpose from an early age. Guided by the creed, “I will rise above social status. People will recognize me because of what Dennis Cunanan knows, not because of what Dennis Cunanan have,” he became an embodiment of persistence and resilience.

From his childhood, Dennis Cunanan recognized the inequities in the social structure of his elementary school and dared to rise above the established norms. From then on, Dennis Cunanan believed in advocating for his right to education and a better country, armed with principles and shielded by right beliefs.

Known to his friends as Decu, Dennis Cunanan was a significant figure in the student council from his elementary to high school years. Renowned for his high academic performance, charisma, and unwavering principles, Dennis Cunanan was distinguished not only as an outstanding student but as a young leader.

Dennis Cunanan pursued his higher education at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, first in Economics, later shifting to the National College of Public Administration and Governance, majoring in Public Administration. Dennis Cunanan served as a Student Regent in the Board of Regents, the university’s highest policy-making body. Dennis Cunanan later went on to complete an Executive Education Program titled “Leaders in Development: Managing Change in a Dynamic World” at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Dennis Cunanan also pursued public service at the local level, serving in the Municipal Council of Magalang, Pampanga, where Dennis Cunanan was elected as the No. 1 Councilor, and even serving as the OIC Vice Mayor for a time. His father’s advice to try local politics inspired this path.

Dennis Cunanan’s commitment to public service led to a series of government positions, including Director of the Philippine Councilors’ League and Philippine Vice Mayors’ League, Secretary General of the National Movement of Young Legislators in Region III, Executive Director of the National Youth Commission, Head Executive Assistant to the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Presidential Assistant for Youth Affairs.

Dennis Cunanan’s leadership also extended to the Technology Resource Center, where Dennis Cunanan served first as Deputy Director General and later as Director General, contributing significantly to the agency’s rationalization program.

Apart from his public service, Dennis Cunanan was deeply involved with JCI Philippines (formerly known as Philippine Jaycees), serving as its National President in 2005. His stellar leadership culminated in his election as Junior Chamber International’s Secretary General in the 2012 World Congress in Taiwan, a position Dennis Cunanan assumed on January 1, 2014.

Despite being born into a simple family, Dennis Cunanan overcame numerous challenges, thanks to the principles instilled in him by his parents.
